Abstract

La procréation et la naissance ne se vivent plus aujourd'hui comme des événements dont nous serions les acteurs inconscients et impuissants. Le développement du savoir en matière de diagnostic anténatal a élargi de façon considérable le champ de notre connaissance et corrélativement celui de nos responsabilités. L'ouvrage que l'on va lire prend précisément pour thème central la question de l'articulation du savoir et de la responsabilité. Il puise son inspiration dans une intuition largement répandue selon laquelle la logique scientifique obéirait à son insu à un fantasme de toute-puissance alimenté par un déni de la mort et de la vulnérabilité de l'être humain. Nous avons voulu interroger à nouveaux frais ce concept de toute-puissance de la médecine scientifique en le confrontant, par des témoignages, des analyses et des débats, au concret de la maladie génétique et du handicap. Dans cette perspective, des questions importantes qui traversent actuellement la médecine prénatales sont traitées dans une approche interdisciplinaire et pluraliste, attentive aux dimensions pratiques et théoriques des problèmes : droit de savoir et droit de ne pas savoir, aspiration à la santé parfaite et prise en considération de la finitude, appréhension du risque, articulation de la vie privée et de la vie publique, rapports entre éthique et droit, place du commerce et du don dans la pratique médicale, qualité de la relation médecin-patiente.

Abstract

Proposals for screening pregnant women and newborns for HIV infection have provoked much controversy. This volume analyzes the possible goals of such screening programs and assesses whether these goals can be achieved. It also provides guidance to policymakers in developing and implementing sound screening policy.
